AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:
Additional rainfall across
much of the state continues to delay alfalfa harvest,
according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics
Service. Producers need warmer, drier conditions for
haying and crop development. Producers used breaks in the
rain to move forward with weed control in row crops and
seeding of annual forage crops. Statewide there were 3.7
days reported suitable for fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county extension
educators, farm service agency county directors, and other
reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION:
Heavy, midweek rains
inundated parts of central and west central South Dakota.
The rain was welcomed by the area, which has been rated
short to very short of moisture, despite reports of localized
flooding and washing. Winner recorded the highest rainfall
total at 5.41 inches. Eastern reporting stations registered
an additional one to two inches of rain for the week.
Average temperatures were normal for the state last week,
with the high of 104 in Oelrichs and Porcupine and a low
of 36 in Custer.
SOIL CONDITION: Heavy rains in the central and north central parts of the state combined with more moderate rainfall in the east have pushed topsoil moisture conditions to 82 percent now rated adequate or surplus. Subsoil conditions improved to 61% adequate or surplus, up from 53 percent a week ago, and 47 percent two weeks ago. Soil conditions have improved little for western parts of the state, while a warm, rain-free week is needed for some areas across the northeast and southeast.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Rain across much of the state kept producers from completing soybean planting and hampered the alfalfa harvest. The soybeans at 94 percent seeded are just slightly behind last year and the five-year average. The alfalfa harvest is well behind last year and the average. Alfalfa quality will be lower for alfalfa rained on during the curing process. All crops are in good to excellent condition except for winter wheat with 44 percent rated poor to very poor. The winter wheat is maturing rapidly with 86 percent headed, well ahead of last year and average.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Nearly all livestock have been moved to pasture in predominately good to excellent condition. The percentage of range and pasture lands rated good to excellent increased 7 points this week to 43 percent, in line with the 5-year average of 44 percent. The poorest pasture, feed, and stock water condtions are in the west, where a number of producers continue to move cow/calf pairs to market due to the poor conditions.
