SD-CW2504 Volume 53 Issue 25
AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:
Persistent light to moderate
rainfall maintained last week's predominately adequate
soil moisture ratings, but continued to hamper the first
cutting alfalfa harvest, according to USDA's South
Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Producers' efforts
are focused on weed control, disease and insect
scouting, and livestock maintenance, in addition to
haying. Statewide, 4.2 days were reported suitable for
fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county extension
educators, farm service agency county directors, and other
reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION:
Most areas of the state
experienced generally damp, cool conditions last week.
All reporting stations received precipitation, but
amounts varied considerably from west to east. Sioux
Falls officially registered 4.11 inches of rain for the
week, but local amounts were higher. Temperatures
averaged nearly nine degrees below normal for the
week. Pickstown recorded the week's high of 91
degrees, while the thermometer dropped to 35 degrees
in McIntosh for the week's low.
SOIL CONDITION: Statewide top and subsoil moisture conditions changed little for the week. Topsoil moisture conditions are rated 84 percent adequate to surplus, up from 82 percent a week ago, while adequate to surplus subsoil ratings are unchanged. Last week's additional rainfall, on already saturated soil profiles, created localized surplus moisture ratings in many eastern areas. Average precipitation across the west is two to four inches below normal for the year, leading to short and very short moisture ratings there.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Field crop conditions are predominately unchanged from last week. Spring seeded small grains are maturing at or ahead of average, with 35 to 51 percent of the crop headed. Twelve percent of the winter wheat has turned color, equaling the five- year average. Soybean seeding is essentially complete at 98 percent seeded, compared to 99 percent seeded a year ago. The first cutting alfalfa harvest is 50 percent complete, well behind last year and the five-year average. Rain fell on much of the hay already harvested, which lowered quality.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Livestock are rated in predominately good to excellent condition statewide. Pasture and range conditions vary west to east. The 29 percent of range and pasturelands rated poor to very poor are located primarily in the west, where rainfall is well below average. Eastern areas account for much of the 41 percent of range and pastureland rated good to excellent where grasslands have flourished with above-average precipitation.
