For Week ending June 27, 2004
SD-CW2604 Volume 53 Issue 26
AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:
Last week's relatively dry
conditions permitted producer progress on first cutting
alfalfa, weed control, and the completion of most
planting, according to USDA's South Dakota
Agricultural Statistics Service. However, the dry
weather continued to deteriorate crop and range
conditions for producers in the west and central.
Producers are focusing on weed control, disease and
insect scouting, and livestock maintenance with much
of the planting finished for the season. Statewide, 6.0
days were reported suitable for fieldwork.
This report is based on information from county extension
educators, farm service agency county directors, and other
reporters across the state.
WEATHER INFORMATION:
Statewide, average
temperatures were nearly ten degrees below normal for
the week. The week's high of 89 degrees occurred in
Oelrichs; while Custer, Philip, and Dupree all recorded
the week's low of 38 degrees. Precipitation amounts in
the east were relatively low compared to previous
weeks. The Faulkton reporting station recorded .76 inch
of rain for the week's high.
SOIL CONDITION: Soil moisture conditions are adequate for much of the state. Seventy-nine percent of the state's topsoil and 62 percent of the subsoil is rated adequate to surplus. A relatively dry week allowed surplus moisture conditions to decline in the east, but worsened conditions in the west where soils are predominately short to very short in moisture.
FIELD CROPS REPORT: Field crops remain in predominately good to excellent condition and are progressing at or ahead of five-year averages. Sixty-nine percent of oats and 61 percent of barley has headed, which is behind last year, but ahead of the five-year average. Spring wheat progression, at 83 percent headed, is well ahead of last year and the five-year average. The average corn height (18") is equal to the five-year average, while the percent of the corn crop sprayed once or twice is ahead of last year and the five- year average. Despite drier conditions, the cooler temperatures delayed baling and kept the first cutting harvest of alfalfa behind last year and the five-year average. Warmer weather is needed for all crops to maintain crop progress.
LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT: Livestock, pasture, and range conditions changed little last week. Sixty-four percent of range and pastureland is rated fair to good, and 27 percent is rated poor to very poor. Conditions continue to be most extreme in the west where some producers have reduced herd numbers or moved livestock extensive distances for adequate pasture and water.
