Return to the List of 2004 CROP WEATHER Reports

Released: October 12, 2004 -- 3:00 pm CST For Week ending October 10, 2004 SD-CW4104 Volume 53 Issue 41

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:    Warm weather has helped soybean harvest to move into full swing, with some farmers postponing corn harvest, allowing the crop to dry in the field and reach final maturity, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Harvest advancement remains behind normal, with winter wheat development aided by recent rains. Major farm activities included preparing for fall harvest, combining soybeans and corn, harvesting silage, cutting hay, fall tillage, planting fall crops, fixing fence, and caring for livestock. Statewide, 5.9 days were suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, Farm Service Agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:   Temperatures ranged from 1 to 10 degrees above normal for the state last week. Spearfish, at 85 degrees, had the high temperature for the week, while both Aberdeen and Clear Lake had the low, at 23 degrees. Precipitation was scattered, with Centerville reporting the most precipitation received, at 0.27 inch.

SOIL CONDITION:    With warm, dry weather predominant across much of the state last week, topsoil and subsoil moisture levels remained similar to the previous week. Topsoil moisture is currently rated at 80 percent adequate to surplus, and subsoil moisture is rated at 65 percent adequate to surplus. Soil temperatures were fairly close to normal last week, with the average soil temperature at 56.5 degrees.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:    With crops slow to reach maturity this year, harvest progress has also fallen behind average. The corn crop is only 83 percent mature and 9 percent harvested, well behind last year's 98 percent mature and 28 percent harvested. The sorghum crop is 85 percent mature. Sorghum harvest advanced 18 percentage points last week, with harvest now 23 percent complete, behind the 41 percent normally harvested. Significant advancements were also made on silage harvest, with corn silage 93 percent harvested and sorghum silage 87 percent harvested. Soybean development advanced to 87 percent mature, with 43 percent harvested, behind the five-year average of 54 percent harvested. Sunflower development remains behind normal with only 65 percent of the crop mature and 9 percent harvested, behind the five-year averages of 85 percent mature and 34 percent harvested. Winter wheat emergence, aided by last week's warm weather, advanced to 55 percent, equaling the five-year average.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    Last week's weather did little to improve range and pasture conditions across the state. Range and pasture are rated 64 percent fair to excellent, down 6 percentage points from the previous week. Cattle and sheep remain in mostly good to excellent condition. The harvest of third cutting alfalfa nears completion, with harvest 92 percent complete.
