Return to the List of 2004 CROP WEATHER Reports

Released: November 22, 2004 -- 3:00 pm CST For Week ending November 21, 2004 SD-CW4704 Volume 53 Issue 47

AGRICULTURAL SUMMARY:    Warm temperatures and minimal precipitation across the state allowed harvest to advance significantly in several areas throughout the state, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. However, wet fields and high-moisture corn continue to cause delays for some farmers and ranchers. Major farm activities included combining row crops, fall tillage, working cattle, and caring for livestock. Statewide, 5.7 days were suitable for fieldwork. This report is based on information from county extension educators, Farm Service Agency county directors, and other reporters across the state.

WEATHER INFORMATION:   Warm weather was beneficial for harvest progress, with scattered precipitation causing delays in several areas. Temperatures ranged in the upper 30's and lower 40's. The high temperature for the week was 67 degrees, reported in Rapid City. The low for the week was 13 degrees, reported in Porcupine. Yankton reported the most precipitation last week, at 0.97 inch.

SOIL CONDITION:    With another week of scattered precipitation, soil moisture levels remain mostly unchanged from the previous week. Topsoil moisture is currently rated at 82 percent adequate to surplus, similar to the previous week and well above last year's 30 percent adequate and surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated at 72 percent adequate to surplus, compared to the previous week's 73 percent adequate to surplus and last year's 21 percent adequate and surplus.

FIELD CROPS REPORT:    Many farmers and ranchers continued to wait for crops and fields to dry out before continuing with the harvest. Wet fields have prevented harvest equipment from getting into the fields, with wet corn forcing farmers and ranchers to spend more time drying down corn to acceptable levels for storage. Corn harvest advanced 17 percentage points last week, with harvest now 87 percent complete. Corn harvest remains behind last year's 99 percent and the five-year average of 97 percent complete. Sorghum harvest nears completion with the crop 94 percent harvested, behind last year's 100 percent and the five-year average of 99 percent. Sunflower harvest also remains behind, with harvest 89 percent complete, compared to last year's 100 percent and the five-year average of 98 percent.

LIVESTOCK, PASTURE, AND RANGE REPORT:    Mild weather has been beneficial to cattle and sheep, with condition ratings in the fair to excellent range. With field residue being used across the state as an additional feed source, feed supplies are rated at 72 percent adequate to surplus. Stock water supplies are currently rated at 63 percent adequate to surplus.
