Return to the List of 1998 Crop Weather Reports

Released: June 1, 1998 -- 3:00 p.m. For Week Ending May 31, 1998 Volume 47 Issue 12

GENERAL
Weather conditions allowed producers to make excellent progress planting row crops, according to the USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Producers continued moving cattle and calves to summer pastures. Weed control is becoming a major concern for farmers, along with grasshoppers and alfalfa weevils. Statewide, there were 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county agents, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters.

SOIL MOISTURE
The northwest area of the state is still reporting short topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions, with part of this area reporting very short conditions. Most areas of the state report adequate topsoil and subsoil conditions, with the northeast still reporting surplus conditions.

CROPS
Row crop planting continues well ahead of the five-year average and the previous three years. Small grain development is also well ahead of recent years. Some tanspot is still showing up in winter wheat, but development remains well above the five-year average. Seventy-nine percent of the soybeans have been planted, with 47 percent emerged. Most of the corn has been planted and 85 percent is emerged, with an average height of 5 inches. Several counties reported drought stress showing up on small grains and alfalfa. Producers have started spraying corn and alfalfa. Many counties reported grasshoppers, and are still reporting alfalfa weevils and cutworms.
