Return to the List of 1998 Crop Weather Reports

Released: June 15, 1998 -- 3:00 p.m. For Week Ending June 14, 1998 Volume 47 Issue 14

GENERAL
Cold, wet weather halted fieldwork and slowed crop development last week, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Producers experienced trouble making hay, with much of it lying wet in fields. Pasture and range development progressed with many areas receiving much needed rainfall. Statewide, there were 2.5 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county agents, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters.

SOIL MOISTURE
Most of the state is reporting adequate topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions, with part of the northeast area of the state still reporting surplus moisture conditions. A smaller portion of the northwest area of the state is reporting short subsoil and topsoil moisture conditions after last week's rains.

CROPS
Little fieldwork was completed last week due to weather conditions. Row crop development was slowed by the cool, wet weather but is still well ahead of the five-year averages. Producers have cultivated 36 percent of corn once, up 10 percent from last week, and ahead of the five-year average of 13 percent. Corn is an average height of 10 inches and, in many areas, is yellow from lack of sunshine and warm weather. Weather slowed haying progress last week, but alfalfa is 52 percent harvested, still ahead of last year and the five-year average. Alfalfa weevils continue to be a big problem, causing deteriorating alfalfa condition. Producers are hoping the cold, wet weather last week will damage the grasshopper population. Spraying and cultivating continued last week when weather permitted.
