Return to the List of 1998 Crop Weather Reports

Released: June 22, 1998 -- 3:00 p.m. For Week Ending June 21, 1998 Volume 47 Issue 15

GENERAL
More rain and cool temperatures hampered field work and slowed small grains/row crop development last week, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. However, progress of all crops is well ahead of last year and average due to early planting. Livestock are benefitingfrom improved summer pastures. There were 2.3 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county agents, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters.

SOIL MOISTURE
Most of the state is reporting adequate topsoil and subsoil moisture after last week's rain. The northwest corner benefited with only a small area now reporting shortages. However, sections of the northeast and southeast have surplus or excess moisture.

CROPS
Row crop development is progressing slowly but still remains ahead of five-year averages, due to early planting. Corn averages 13 inches, 50 percent cultivated once, with 86 percent in good to excellent condition. Soybeans are 82 percent good to excellent condition, with 93 percent emerged. Small grains are developing well, with 94 percent winter wheat headed and 28 percent turning color, well ahead of the five-year average of 7 percent. In addition, 37 percent of spring wheat, 31 of both oats and barley are headed. First alfalfa cutting is 55 percent complete but wet conditions are still causing problems. Also, alfalfa weevils are a major concern for producers.
