Return to the List of 1998 Crop Weather Reports

Released: July 6, 1998 -- 3:00 p.m. For Week Ending July 5, 1998 Volume 47 Issue 17

GENERAL
Warm, dry weather enabled producers to make excellent progress haying, cultivating, and spraying, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Conditions allowed crops to advance rapidly, with development still considerably ahead of the five-year averages. Statewide, there were five days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county agents, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters.

SOIL MOISTURE
A smaller section of the northeast corner of the state is reporting surplus soil moisture conditions, and the extreme southeast corner is now reporting adequate soil moisture after dryer weather this week. The rest of the state is reporting adequate topsoil and subsoil conditions.

CROPS
Satisfactory conditions allowed producers to make good fieldwork progress, with 82 percent of alfalfa harvested once and 17 percent harvested twice. Soybeans and flaxseed are 18 and 53 percent blooming, respectively, both well ahead of the five-year averages of 6 and 24 percent. Corn is an average height of 31 inches, with 89 percent cultivated once and 48 percent twice. Small grain development is well ahead of the five-year averages. Winter wheat jumped to 80 percent turning color, winter rye 56, barley 40, oats 27, and spring wheat 35 percent turning color. In addition, winter wheat and winter rye are 26 and 44 percent ripe, respectively. A growing population of grasshoppers is a concern in many counties. Alfalfa weevils are still a problem, but producers expect the second cutting of alfalfa to be better than the first.
