Return to the List of 1998 Crop Weather Reports

Released: July 20, 1998 -- 3:00 p.m. For Week Ending July 19, 1998 Volume 47 Issue 19

GENERAL
Hot, dry conditions allowed producers to make excellent progress harvesting small grains during the week, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Range and pasture are starting to stress from the heat and lack of moisture, while row crops are growing rapidly. Statewide, there were 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county agents, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters.

SOIL MOISTURE
Soil conditions are good across the state, with most areas reporting adequate topsoil and subsoil conditions. A small area in the northeast corner of the state is still reporting surplus soil conditions.
