Return to the List of 1998 Crop Weather Reports

Released: September 14, 1998 -- 3:00 p.m. For Week Ending September 13, 1998 Volume 47 Issue 27

GENERAL
Warm, dry weather continued to cause rapid development in row crops, but is delaying winter wheat seeding, as producers wait for more moisture, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major activities by producers during the week were cutting silage, haying, and preparing machinery for row crop harvesting. Statewide, there were 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county agents, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters.

SOIL MOISTURE
Soil conditions continued to worsen with nearly no rainfall received during the week. The topsoil moisture rating increased to 43 percent less than adequate compared to 25 percent last week. Subsoil moisture increased to 32 percent less than adequate compared to 20 percent last week.

CROPS
Corn silage harvested jumped 34 points to 53 percent completed compared to the five-year average of 11 percent. Above normal temperatures caused corn to dry down quickly and hastened harvesting. Mature corn rose to 35 percent compared to the five-year average of 17 percent. Reports of shorter day corn and high moisture corn being harvested has corn harvest underway. Soybeans dropping leaves jumped 37 points to 62 percent, while those mature increased to 18 percent, compared to the five-year averages of 39 percent and 13 percent, respectively. Winter wheat seeding is getting off to a slower than normal start, as producers wait for additional moisture before seeding. At 29 percent, seeded progress is 13 points behing last year and 2 points behind the five-year average.

LIVESTOCK AND FORAGE
Warm, dry weather provided for excellent haying conditions as the third cutting of alfalfa increased to 69 percent completed. Producers are moving hay to winter-feeding areas. Livestock and pasture conditions slipped, as another dry week continued to cause poorer grazing conditions and a decrease in stock water supplies. Stock water supplies rated 2 percent very short, 10 percent short, 83 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus.

WEATHER
Temperatures averaged 4 to 13 degrees above normal across the state last week. The highest temperature was 104 degrees at Pierre and the lowest was 40 degrees at Brookings. Little to no precipitation was received at most locations across the state. Buffalo Gap received the most with 0.43 inch.
