Return to the List of 1998 Crop Weather Reports

Released: September 21, 1998 -- 3:00 p.m. For Week Ending September 20, 1998 Volume 47 Issue 28

GENERAL
Continued warm, dry weather across the state last week benefited the start of row crop harvest and maturation, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Dry soil conditions have caused winter wheat seeding to fall behind the five- year average. Statewide, there were 6.4 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county agents, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters.

SOIL MOISTURE
Soil conditions showed little or no improvement across most of the state, as very little rainfall was received during the week. Conditions remained short in the northeast, northwest, south central and north central areas of the state, with topsoil moisture conditions increasing to 48 percent less than adequate compared to 43 percent last week. Subsoil moisture remained 32 percent less than adequate.

CROPS
Warm, sunny weather advanced the maturity of row crops, with harvest starting in many areas of the state. Corn harvested for grain is 6 percent completed, ahead of the five-year average of 1 percent. Mature corn rose to 63 percent, compared to the five-year average of 33 percent. Producers also started soybean harvest ahead of the five-year average. Soybeans dropping leaves jumped 25 points to 87 percent, while those mature increased to 55 percent, compared to the five-year averages of 60 and 26 percent, respectively. Corn silage harvested is 74 percent completed, compared to the five- year average of 30 percent. Poor soil conditions and lack of moisture are affecting winter wheat seeding. Although seeding is 50 percent completed, it is 18 points behind last year and 11 points behind the five-year average.

LIVESTOCK AND FORAGE
Another week of warm, dry weather continued to stress livestock and pasture conditions. The warm weather is benefiting haying as the third cutting of alfalfa increased to 80 percent completed, with many producers reporting a fourth cutting getting underway. Producers continue to move hay to winter feeding areas. Stock water supplies rated 1 percent very short, 15 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus.

WEATHER
Temperatures averaged from 7 to 12 degrees above normal across the state last week. The highest temperature was 103 degrees at Pierre and the lowest temperature was 41 degrees at Brookings and Custer. Little to no precipitation was received in many locations across the state. Yankton received the most precipitation with 0.56 inch.
