Return to the List of 1998 Crop Weather Reports

Released: November 2, 1998 -- 3:00 p.m For Week Ending November 1, 1998 Volume 47 Issue 34

GENERAL
Once again, rain and fog in the middle of the week slowed row crop harvest, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Wet field conditions are hampering producers' progress with corn and sunflower harvest. There were 3 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county agents, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters.

SOIL MOISTURE
Fall rains are keeping the soil moisture across the region in good condition, with the majority of the state reporting adequate subsoil and topsoil moisture. An area in the northeast part of the state and a few other isolated areas are reporting surplus topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions.

CROPS
Wet weather and field conditions are keeping producers out of the fields, slowing harvest to just slightly ahead of the five-year averages. Many producers report that harvest may be delayed until after the first freeze of the season. There have not been enough sunny days between the rains to dry fields enough to complete harvest. Corn harvest slowed to 66 percent complete, up 11 points from last week and still ahead of the five-year average of 57 percent harvested. Soybean harvest is 92 percent complete, behind last year's 97 percent. Sunflower harvested is 83 percent complete, up 8 points from last week and 2 points ahead of the average. Benefiting from the moisture, winter wheat rates 87 percent good to excellent. After a slow start this season, winter wheat emerged is 98 percent, behind last year's 99 percent.

LIVESTOCK AND FORAGE
Livestock conditions remain good to excellent over the region. Pastures are greening up and remain in good to excellent condition due to all the moisture received. Some producers report keeping cattle on pasture as well as stubble fields. Producers are busy weaning calves and moving hay that is dry in preparation for winter. Feed supplies are reported to be adequate heading into the winter months. Stock water supplies rated 3 percent short, 76 percent adequate, and 21 percent surplus.

WEATHER
Temperatures statewide averaged above normal last week. These averages ranged from 5 degrees below at Lemmon, to 10 degrees above normal at Watertown and Webster. The highest temperature was 74 degrees at Sioux City, with the lowest temperature of 23 degrees at Lemmon. Marion received the most precipitation with 1.98 inches, while Lemmon received none.
