Return to the List of 1998 Crop Weather Reports

Released: November 30, 1998 -- 3:00 p.m. For Week Ending November 29, 1998 Volume 47 Issue 38

GENERAL
Sunshine and warm temperatures last week melted the remaining snow, leaving producers with muddy fields and corn still standing, according to USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Harvest continued slowly in many areas of the state, with producers ham pered by soft, muddy fields. There were 3.9 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county agents, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters.

SOIL MOISTURE
A week of warm weather melted the remaining snow around the state. Soil conditions continue to be adequate, with areas in the northeast and western parts of the state reporting surplus topsoil and subsoil moisture, along with the southeast area of the state reporting surplus subsoil conditions.

CROPS
Another week of sunshine and warm temperatures kept fields soft and muddy, making it difficult for producers to work last week. Some producers reported harvesting in the late evening and early morning hours when the ground hardened enough to allow combining. In spite of the muddy conditions, harvest progressed with 91 percent of the corn harvested, up 5 points from last week but behind the five-year average of 97 percent. Sunflower harvested is 96 percent complete, up 2 points from last week but 4 points behind the average. Sorghum is 90 percent harvested, remaining behind the five-year average of 99 percent. Many producers report a hard frost is needed before harvest will be complete, with the possibility of crops still in the fields next year. Emerged winter wheat and rye remain in good to excellent condition.

LIVESTOCK AND FORAGE
In spite of the muddy lots and pastures, cattle remain in good to excellent condition, with only a few reports of weight loss and pneumonia. Most producers report that cattle are now in the winter feeding areas. Most hay moving has been halted due to the wet, muddy conditions. Stock water supplies rated 2 percent short, 76 percent adequate, and 22 percent surplus.
