Return to the List of 1999 Crop Weather Reports

Released: April 26, 1999 -- 3:00 p. For Week Ending April 25, 1999 Volume 48 Issue 7

GENERAL
Producers across the state took advantage of dry, sunny conditions early in the week to continue with small grain seeding and to begin planting row crops, with 1 percent of the corn crop planted, according to the USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. By midweek, clouds and rain moved across the state, along with cooler temper atures. The damp weather hindered field conditions, and cool soil temperatures have slowed crop emer gence. Producers have remained busy spreading fertilizer, moving and branding cattle, as well as repairing equipment and fencing. Statewide, there were 2.7 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors and other reporters around the state.

SOIL MOISTURE
Soil moisture across the state is reported to be mostly adequate, while areas in the extreme southeast are still reporting surplus topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions.
