Return to the List of 1999 Crop Weather Reports

Released: May 10, 1999 -- 3:00 p.m. For Week Ending May 9, 1999 Volume 48 Issue 9

GENERAL
Wide-spread, heavy rain halted fieldwork across the state, according to the USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Many producers had only a couple days of fieldwork before seeding and fieldwork was stopped by uncooperative weather throughout the week. There were many reports of water standing in low areas. Producers are in need of several warm, dry days in order to get tractors back into fields. Corn seeding progress was 20 percent complete as of week's end. Statewide, there were 1.6 days suitable for fieldwork. .

Based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors and other reporters around the state.

SOIL MOISTURE
After a week of heavy rains across the state, soil moisture is reported to be surplus in the eastern half of the state, while the western area of the state is still reporting adequate topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions.

CROPS
Before heavy rains halted fieldwork last week, corn planting continued across the state, with 20 percent seeded, up 13 points from last week. Spring wheat and oat seeding increased 9 and 17 points, respectively, from last week, with 82 percent of spring wheat planted and 71 percent of oats complete. Barley seeding progressed to 69 percent seeded. The cool, windy and wet weather has slowed small grain development and delayed seeding of row crops. Spring wheat is reported at 56 percent emerged, 25 points ahead of last week, yet 14 points behind last year's average. Producers have reported barley progress at 36 percent emerged, 28 points behind last year's average. Oats are reported at 38 percent emerged, compared to last week's 21 percent. There were several reports from the south-central counties of leaf spotting in winter wheat.
