Return to the List of 1999 Crop Weather Reports

Released: June 7, 1999 -- 3:00 p.m. For Week Ending June 6, 1999 Volume 48 Issue 13

GENERAL
Another week of warm, dry weather allowed producers to make good planting progress, according to the USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Scattered, severe storms delayed and, in some areas of the state, stopped fieldwork over the weekend. Statewide, there were 5.0 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors and other reporters around the state.

SOIL MOISTURE
Warm, dry weather led to improved soil conditions across the state. There are still pockets of surplus topsoil and subsoil moisture in the extreme northeast and southeast areas of the state, while the rest of the state is reporting adequate soil conditions.

CROPS
Corn planting was 94 percent complete this week, up 14 points from last week, with many producers switching to planting soybeans. Soybeans are 76 percent planted, up 24 percent from last week and ahead of the five-year average of 69 percent. Sorghum and sunflower planted were 30 and 52 percent complete, compared to the five-year averages of 47 and 48 percent, respectively. Small grains were in fair to excellent condition but progress slowed behind the five-year average. Warm, dry weather would benefit the progress tremendously. Weed control is a main concern for producers, with many spraying fields. Weekend storms brought hail and high winds to some areas of the state, with crop damage reported in central McCook County.
