Return to the List of 1999 Crop Weather Reports

Released: June 14, 1999 -- 3:00 p.m. For Week Ending June 13, 1999 Volume 48 Issue 14

GENERAL
Warm weather and little precipitation allowed many producers to make progress in row crop planting, according to the USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Producers were busy cultivating and spraying, as weed control is a priority in many areas. Statewide, there were 3.7 days suit able for fieldwork.

Based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors and other reporters around the state.

SOIL MOISTURE
Another week of warm, dry weather maintained adequate soil conditions across the state. There are pockets of surplus topsoil and subsoil moisture in the extreme northeast and southeast areas of the state, while the rest of the state is reporting adequate soil conditions.

CROPS
Isolated storms in the western and northern parts of the state slowed fieldwork this week; but in others areas, producers continued planting and cultivating. Corn planting is nearly completed with 98 percent done. Soybeans are 92 percent planted, up 16 percent from last week and ahead of the five-year average of 80 percent. There were several reports from the northern and northeastern parts of the state that producers are replanting soybeans due to the heavy rain and flooding. Sorghum and sunflower planted were 71 and 66 percent complete, compared to the five-year averages of 64 and 69 percent, respectively. The warm weather spurred small grain crop development slightly ahead of the five-year average. There are reports of leaf disease showing up in the small grains due to the wet conditions, as well as scab showing up in the winter wheat. Weed control is a main concern for producers, with many spraying fields; however, some are slowed by wet fields.
