Released: June 21, 1999 -- 3:00 p.m. For Week Ending June 20, 1999 Volume 48 Issue 15

GENERAL
A week of wet and cool weather condi tions limited fieldwork progress for many producers across the state, according to the USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Producers stayed busy spraying and cultivating row crops as the weather permitted. Statewide, there were 4.2 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors and other reporters around the state.

SOIL MOISTURE
A week of light precipitation across the state left surplus topsoil and subsoil conditions in the extreme northeast and southeast areas of the state, and surplus topsoil conditions in portions of west central South Dakota. The rest of the state is reporting adequate soil conditions.

CROPS
Although additional rainfall was recorded across the state, producers were able to make some fieldwork progress. Both corn and soybean planting drew near completion, with 99 percent and 96 percent done respectively. Some producers in the northeastern corner of the state continue to report replanting of soybean acres due to crusting from excess rainfall. Sunflower and sorghum planted were 87 percent and 86 percent complete, both ahead of the five-year averages. Small grain development progressed despite below average temperatures and cloudy skies. There were a few reports of the presence of leaf disease in both winter and spring wheat. The wet field conditions in many areas of the state have sparked weed problems. This has kept producers busy spraying fields and cultivating row crops. A few reports of grasshopper problems were reported in the east central portion of the state.
