Return to the List of 1999 Crop Weather Reports

Released: June 28, 1999 -- 3:00 p.m For Week Ending June 27, 1999 Volume 48 Issue 16

GENERAL
Sporadic storms across the state slowed progress in cultivating, spraying and harvesting alfalfa, according to the USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Sunshine and dry conditions are needed to reduce the threat of disease and spur crop development. Statewide, there were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors and other reporters around the state.

SOIL MOISTURE
Soil conditions are reported to be mostly adequate across the state with pockets of surplus topsoil and subsoil moisture in the extreme northeast and southeast areas of the state.

CROPS
Corn and soybean planting is virtually completed around the state, with some producers in the northeast reporting soybeans being replanted last week, due to crusting from excess rainfall. Sunflower and sorghum planted were 95 percent and 92 percent complete, both ahead of the five-year averages. Winter wheat is 45 percent turning color, well ahead of the five-year average of 25 percent. In addition, 64 percent of spring wheat, 50 percent of oats, and 54 percent of barley are headed, all ahead of the five-year averages. Lack of sunshine and wet conditions slowed the development of the crops and posed a greater threat of disease. There were reports of leaf disease in barley and winter and spring wheat. Weed control is still a concern of producers as they work to spray and cultivate fields. Severe weather continues to cause problems across the state, with reports of significant hail damage to crops in Gregory County.
