Return to the List of 1999 Crop Weather Reports

Released: July 6, 1999 -- 3:00 p.m. For Week Ending July 4, 1999 Volume 48 Issue 17

GENERAL
Continued scattered storms and wet conditions hamper fieldwork, as most producers are fighting weed problems, according to the USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Crops continue to progress slightly ahead of the average, although many fields are showing signs of too much water. Statewide, there were 3.1 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors and other reporters around the state.

SOIL MOISTURE
Pockets of surplus topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions exist in the extreme northeast and southeast areas of the state, while soil conditions are reported to be mostly adequate across the rest of the state.

CROPS
Small grains continue to progress ahead of the five-year average in spite of the continued wet conditions. Winter wheat is 78 percent turning color, up 33 points from last week, and ahead of the five- year average of 53 percent. Spring wheat is 83 percent headed, while oats and barley are both 72 percent headed. There were many reports of leaf disease and rust showing up, and lodging of winter wheat is a concern for many producers. Statewide, 75 percent of corn acreage is cultivated once and 21 percent twice. Soybeans are 20 percent blooming, ahead of the five-year average of 9 percent. Weed control is still a large concern of producers as they work to spray and cultivate fields. Severe weather continues to cause problems across the state, with reports of significant hail damage to crops in Tripp and Gregory counties, as well as many West River counties.
