Return to the List of 1999 Crop Weather Reports

Released: July 12, 1999 -- 3:00 p.m. For Week Ending July 11, 1999 Volume 48 Issue 18

GENERAL
Weather conditions across the state allowed crops to advance, with development still ahead of the five-year average, according to the USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Warm, dry weather enabled producers to make great progress in haying, cultivating, and spraying. State wide, there were 5.3 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors and other reporters around the state.

SOIL MOISTURE
A week of warm temperatures and little rain fall has kept soil conditions across the state mostly adequate. Pockets of surplus topsoil and subsoil moisture exist in the extreme northeast and southeast areas of the state.

CROPS
Several producers reported that winter wheat harvest began last week and will begin in earnest during the next week. At week's end, winter wheat harvested was 3 percent, with 29 percent ripe. Spring wheat is 92 percent headed, while oats and barley are 89 and 86 percent headed, respectively. Producers continue to report leaf disease in small grains, but there is no concern about yield reduction at this time. The humid weather has helped soybean conditions and development which, with 26 percent blooming, are ahead of the five-year average of 21 percent. Statewide, corn height is 35 inches, with 92 percent of the acreage cultivated once and 43 percent of the acreage cultivated twice. A growing population of grasshoppers is a concern in Codington county.
