Return to the List of 1999 Crop Weather Reports

Released: July 19, 1999 -- 3:00 p. For Week Ending July 11, 1999 Volume 48 Issue 19

GENERAL
GENERAL: Hot, humid weather conditions across the state spurred crop development ahead of the five-year average, according to the USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Winter grains made significant progress during the week, allowing winter wheat harvest to get into full swing statewide. Warm, dry weather enabled producers to make great progress in haying, cultivating, and spraying. Statewide, there were 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors and other reporters around the state.

SOIL MOISTURE
A week of warm, humid tempera tures and scattered showers has maintained soil conditions across the state as mostly adequate. Pockets of surplus topsoil and subsoil moisture con tinue to exist in the extreme northeastern area of the state.

CROPS
CROPS: Winter wheat harvest went into full swing in most areas of the state, with 41 percent harvested and 79 percent ripe. Small grains developed rapidly due to favorable weather. At week's end, 64 percent of spring wheat was turning color, along with 55 percent of oats and 43 percent of barley. Spring wheat, barley, and oats continued to develop ahead of the five-year average, with 9 percent, 11 percent, and 19 percent, respectively, into the ripe stage. Some areas reported problems with leaf diseases and a few others grasshopper problems. Soybean and corn development continued a little behind last year but equal to or ahead of the five-year average. Soybean development was rated 39 percent blooming and 5 percent setting pods, while corn height averaged 54 inches, with 79 percent cultivated twice and 17 percent tasseling.
