Return to the List of 1999 Crop Weather Reports

Released: July 26, 1999 -- 3:00 p.m. For Week Ending July 25, 1999 Volume 48 Issue 20

GENERAL
GENERAL: Hot, humid weather quickly advanced row crop development this week, according to the USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Producers report the humid conditions slowing winter wheat harvest, with fog in the early mornings. Statewide, there were 4.4 days suitable for fieldwork.

Based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors and other reporters around the state.

SOIL MOISTURE
Another week of hot, humid weather is causing soil moisture concerns around the state. Topsoil and subsoil conditions remain mostly adequate, with isolated reports of short conditions. An area of surplus topsoil and subsoil moisture continues to exist in the extreme northeastern section of the state.

CROPS
CROPS: Small grain harvest is well underway around the state, with 67 percent of the winter wheat harvested, up 26 points from last week. Four percent of the spring wheat has been harvested, with 18 percent and 4 percent of oats and barley harvested. The hot, humid weather has slowed the harvest process, as producers have to wait for fog to lift before getting into fields. Spring wheat, barley, and oats are 28 percent, 28 percent, and 41 percent ripe, respectively, ahead of the five-year averages. Row crops continue to develop rapidly due to the hot weather conditions. Soybeans were 58 percent blooming and 23 percent setting pods, up 19 and 18 points from last week, respectively. Corn height averaged 66 inches, with 93 percent cultivated twice. Forty-six percent of the corn is tasseling, with 27 percent silked, both right on the five-year average. There are still reports of grasshopper problems around the state.
