Released: October 12, 1999 -- 3:00 p.m For Week Ending October 10, 1999 Volume 48 Issue 31

GENERAL
GENERAL: Harvest is off to a good start in selected areas of the state, while other areas wait for final maturing and dry-down of grain before kicking off harvest in earnest, according to the USDA's South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Major activities during the week were selected harvest of row crops, seeding of winter grains, harvesting corn silage, spraying herbicides, fencing, preparing calves for fall sales, and moving livestock from distant pastures. Statewide, there were 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork. Based on information from county extension educators, farm service agency county directors, and other reporters around the state.

SOIL MOISTURE
SOIL MOISTURE: Soil moisture levels fell slightly across the state, but remain mostly adequate. Areas with topsoil moisture considered very short or short cover 23 percent of the state, an increase from last week. Surplus topsoil moisture is reported over 9 percent of the state and is concentrated mainly in the central to northeast. Topsoil moisture remains short in the southeast corner of the state.

CROPS
CROPS: Producers in various areas of the state are harvesting row crops, while in other portions of the state, farmers are having to wait for further dry-down of grain and drying of green stalks. Reports were noted of highly variable yields within counties for soybeans and corn as a result of the hot, dry extremes in the latter part of summer. Soybeans rated mature, at 88 percent, remain 4 points behind the five-year average. Soybean harvest was 36 percent complete, compared to 53 percent last year and 42 percent for the five-year average. Corn rated mature, at 90 percent, is still 4 percentage points behind the five-year average. Corn harvested for grain, at 19 percent, is still 3 points ahead of the average, while corn cut for silage is now 95 percent complete. Sunflower development also remains behind the five-year average. Sunflower rated mature are at 73 percent, while 16 percent of the crop is harvested. Winter wheat seeded is now 92 percent completed. Winter wheat emerged jumped 24 percentage points to 71 percent.
