1997 APPLE AND PEACH SUMMARY
Virginia

Apple production in the Commonwealth totaled 270 million pounds in 1997, down 5 million pounds from the previous year. Several late freezes along with hot and dry weather early in the season decreased fruit size. Utilized production was up 2.0 million pounds compared with last year.
Peach production was also negatively impacted by the weather with temperatures in the low 20's in April. Production in 1997 was 9 million pounds, down 36 percent from 1996. Utilized production totaled 8 million pounds.

United States

U.S. utilized apple production totaled 10.3 billion pounds in 1997, with no change from 1996 production. Late season rains and beneficial temperatures combined with excellent weather during harvest improved yields.
U.S. utilized peach production was set at 2.5 billion pounds, up 0.5 billion from the previous year. The California crop, accounting for 73 percent of the U.S. peach crop, was down from 83 percent in 1996. .
