1997 COMMERCIAL FLORICULTURE SUMMARY

     Virginia's wholesale value of all commercial floriculture sales totaled $70.8 million in 1997, up 16 percent from the previous year's total of $61.0 million. Approximately 91 percent of the state's sales came from producers with $100,000 or more in sales, this percentage remained unchanged from 1996.

    For the United States the total wholesale value of floriculture crops grown by operations exceeding the $100,000 sales level reached $3.56 billion in 1997, a 13 percent increase over the $3.15 billion from 1996.

    California had 22 percent of the total wholesale value for the 36 states surveyed. Florida was second with 19 percent. Michigan, Texas, and Ohio rounded out the top five states. California, Michigan, and Ohio posted increases over the previous year, but Florida and Texas fell below last year's totals.

The value of sales for growers below the $100,000 level were estimated by multiplying the number of growers in each size group by the midpoint of each dollar value range.
