1997 HONEY PRODUCTION SUMMARY

Virginia

     Virginia's honey production (from producers with at least five colonies) totaled 424,000 pounds in 1997. Total production was up 74,000 pounds from the previous year. The yield per colony was up three pounds from the previous year at 53 pounds compared to 50 pounds in 1996. Stocks were 37 percent of production compared with 34 percent in 1996.    




United States

    United States honey production for 1997 (from producers with five or more colonies) totaled 192 million pounds, down three percent from 1996. There were 2.58 million honey producing colonies in 1997, compared with 2.56 million in 1996. Yield per colony averaged 74.6 pounds, down 2.7 pounds from the 77.3 pounds in 1996. Colonies that produced in more than one state were counted in each state and yields may be understated. .
