1998 MILK PRODUCTION SUMMARY



     Milk production in Virginia totaled 1.84 billion pounds in 1998, down slightly from 1997. Of the 1998 milk produced, 13 million pounds were used on the farms where produced. The average number of milk cows during 1998 was 124,000 head, 1,000 fewer than 1997. Milk production per cow averaged 14,847 pounds for all of 1998, a decrease of only 17 pounds from the 1997 average. A total of 67 million pounds of milkfat was produced in 1998. There were 1,800 farms in Virginia with one or more milk cows in 1998.
    Cash receipts from marketings of Virginia produced milk and cream totaled $296 million, an increase of 15 percent from 1997 receipts. A total of 1.83 billion pounds of milk was sold by Virginia dairymen in 1998. Average combined price per hundredweight, including both fluid and manufacturing grade milk, for Virginia producers was $16.20 in 1998. The average milk price was $2.20 above the 1997 price. .
