1997 POULTRY SUMMARY
Poultry continues to be one of Virginia's most valuable agricultural commodities,
contributing over $730 million in gross income to the States' economy.
Virginia's commercial broiler production was 1.22 billion pounds, two percent below 1996's
production but two percent above 1995.
Turkey production was 485 million pounds, the same as 1996. Price per pound for turkeys
was down four cents from the previous year and down six cents from 1995.
Virginia egg production decreased three percent from the 1996 production level with a total
of 862 million eggs produced in 1997.
