Over 2 inches of rain were reported in Greenwood and Rice counties. The northwest area reported snowfall with over 8 inches in the Goodland area. Temperatures remained cold during the week but warmed to highs in the 70’s by the weekend. Precipitation and below normal temperatures limited producers to an average of only 2.1 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies across Kansas were rated as 2 percent short, 68 percent adequate, and 30 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated as 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus. Limited activities for the week included harvesting corn, sorghum, sunflowers, and soybeans, along with planting winter wheat. Field Crop Report: Below average temperatures combined with above average precipitation has delayed row crop harvest for the past 4 weeks. Sorghum is the hardest hit being 42 points behind average, while corn and soybeans are behind the average by 34 and 23 points, respectively. Fifty-two percent of the corn crop has been harvested, behind both last year at 69 percent and the 5- year average of 86 percent. Corn condition is rated as 3 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 19 percent excellent. Precipitation varied from 0.64 inch in the western Upper Peninsula to 2.94 inches in the central Lower Peninsula. Average temperatures ranged from 1 degree above normal in the western Upper Peninsula to 5 degrees above normal in the central, east central, and southeastern Lower Peninsula. Excessive rainfall persisted. The added moisture created soggy fields and stopped all field activities. Some growers have started harvesting corn as high-moisture, while others continued to wait for drier weather to help further dry down corn. Fall activities included harvesting sugarbeets, dry beans, and apples, hauling manure, and preparing equipment for winter storage. Field Crops Report Field Crops Rains continued this week and made any fieldwork difficult. Many farmers hoped for drier weather to aid in the dry down of crops and to dry out severely saturated soils. Corn moisture remained high. Some growers experienced high drying costs. Harvest proved to be difficult due to mold emergence on tips of corn ears. A reporter in the southeast stated, "Some were being turned away (from elevators) and said to dump it out on the field, total loss." Corn silage harvest was nearly complete. Soybean harvest continued. In the central region, some fields were plowed under. Wheat planting continued as conditions permitted and germination was slow. Bags of wheat seed were available; however, many growers were unsure whether to plant this late in the season. Sugarbeet harvest paused for the time being. According to a producer in the Thumb, "A dry week is needed to finish our harvest." Dry bean harvest neared completion. Fruit, Vegetable, and Specialty Crops Report Fruit Harvest of late apple varieties continued in a few orchards. A large quantity will not be picked due to the size of the crop and the loss of processing markets. Grape harvest was completed. Fall clean-up activities began in orchards and vineyards as weather allowed. This will be the final fruit summary for the 2009 season. Vegetables Vegetable harvest is complete for the 2009 season. Across the State, growers have focused on removing plastic and stakes from their fields, performing tillage operations, planting winter cover crops as weather conditions allowed, and preparing equipment for winter storage. This will be the final vegetable summary for the 2009 season. As a result, already wet fields were again negatively impacted by unusually high precipitation totals. Harvest of the state's major row crops trails the normal pace by over three weeks. However, a few areas in East Tennessee were able to make some meaningful harvest gains. Over a third of the burley crop has been stripped, a pace ahead of last year but behind the 5-year average. The wet conditions were also hampering winter wheat growers, as planting progress was two weeks behind the normal pace. Just over a tenth of the crop was emerged by week's end. Cattle were rated in mostly good-to-excellent condition. Hay stocks were rated in mostly adequate-to-surplus supply. Pastures remained rated in mostly good-to-excellent condition. There were 3 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture levels were rated 52 percent adequate, and 48 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels were rated 56 percent adequate and 44 percent surplus. Temperatures across the state last week averaged 1 to 3 degrees above normal. Rainfall averaged above normal last week with the highest rainfall occurring across Middle and West Tennessee. We are still seeing good yields in the 2 bale range. Not much harvesting last week due to 5"-7" of rainfall over a four day period. A new concern rising is the Mississippi River which is to crest at 27' in Memphis by the end of the week. This would flood thousands of acres in the Mississippi Bottom ground. We desperately need good dry weather this week to get the crop out." James Griffin, Lauderdale County "Just too much rain. Every time we get close to getting harvest equipment back to the field we get more rain. Quality issues now with the harvested product." Richard Buntin, Crockett County "We still have Dark Tobacco in the Field. The Cool wet weather has really slowed down the harvest." Joseph Griffy, Stewart County "Hay stored outside has been saturated and quality will be greatly affected before feeding later this winter." David K. Glover, Smith County "Hay stocks are adequate without taking into effect the late hay which is still in the field waiting to be cut or waiting to dry. Tobacco is hurting both in the field and in the barn. No soybeans or corn has yet been harvested because of the wet conditions." Scott Chadwell, Putnam County "Additional grain harvest was accomplished this week with somewhat dryer and warmer conditions. A few producers were able to finish up with corn grain harvest this week and reported very favorable yields. Some hay crop stills remains standing in the field."
