Acres Planted to Wyoming Crops Increase In 2007

 

Results of the annual June acreage survey indicate that Wyoming producers have 1.50 million acres in crop production in 2007, according to Nancy Hussey with the Wyoming Field Office of USDA NASS.  This acreage, which includes acres planted to all major crops and those expected to be cut for alfalfa and other hay, is 1 percent larger than in 2006.  Acreage planted to grain and row crops totaled 404,000 acres, down 7 percent from 2006.

 

Wyoming producers planted 150,000 acres of winter wheat last fall, unchanged from the previous year; 135,000 acres are expected to be harvested for grain same as last year.  Spring wheat seedings totaled 8,000 acres in 2007, same as last year; 6,000 acres are expected to be harvested for grain, also the same as last year.  Acreage planted to oats was down 3,000 acres from last year to 45,000 acres; 12,000 acres are expected for grain, unchanged from last year. Barley area planted, at 60,000 acres, is down 10,000 acres from 2006.  A total of 45,000 acres of barley are expected to be harvested for grain, down 12,000 acres from 2006.

 

A total of 85,000 acres of corn were planted statewide, unchanged from 2006; 45,000 acres are expected to be harvested for grain, also unchanged from 2006.  Dry bean planted acreage, at 25,000 acres, is down 14 percent from 2006; 24,000 acres of dry beans are expected to be harvested, down 13 percent from last year.  Sugarbeet acreage is down 28 percent from last year to 31,000 acres planted, 30,000 acres are expected to be harvested for sugar which would also be down 25 percent.

 

Producers expect to harvest 1.11 million acres of all hay in 2007, which would be up 5 percent from last year.  The acreage is comprised of 550,000 acres of alfalfa, up 50,000 acres from 2006, and 550,000 acres of other hay, unchanged from last year.

 

United States:  The 2007 winter wheat planted area is estimated at 45.1 million acres, up 1 percent from the previous estimate and up 11 percent from 2006. Area harvested for grain is forecasted at 37.6 million acres, up 1 percent from the June forecast and up 21 percent from last year.

 

Area planted to spring wheat other than durum for 2007 is estimated at 13.1 million acres, down 12 percent from last year. Grain area is expected to total 12.7 million acres, down 8 percent from 2006.

 

Growers seeded 4.04 million acres of barley for 2007, up 17 percent from the 3.45 million acres seeded last year. Acres for harvest, at 3.54 million, are up 20 percent from 2006.

 

Area planted to sugarbeets totals 1.26 million acres, down 8 percent from 2006. The area for harvest is forecast at 1.22 million acres, down 7 percent from 2006.

 

The 2007 corn planted area for all purposes is estimated at 92.9 million acres, up 19 percent from 2006 and 14 percent higher than 2005. This is the highest planted area since 1944, when 95.5 million acres were planted for all purposes. Growers expect to harvest 85.4 million acres for grain, up 21 percent from 2006 to the highest level since 1933.

 

U.S. dry bean growers planted 1.50 million acres for 2007, down 8 percent from both last year and two years ago.

 

Producers expect to harvest 61.8 million acres of all hay in 2007, up 2 percent from 2006.  Expected harvested area of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures, at 21.5 million acres, is up marginally from last year.  Expected area for harvest of all other types of hay totals 40.3 million acres, up 2 percent from 2006.
