USDA/NASS Disaster Analysis Web Page https://www.nass.usda.gov/Research_and_Science/Disaster-Analysis/index.php Metadata Event: Texas Wildfires - February 26 - March 10 2024 (Assessment Period) Last Updated: March 19, 2024 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Report File Name: 2024_Texas_Wildfires_Report.pdf Description: Beginning on February 26th (2024), emergency alerts were issued for multiple wildfires in northern Texas with potential to expand. The Smokehouse Creek incident was the largest of these wildfires and is the largest wildfire in Texas history with over one million acres of land burned. Damage reported in affected areas included hundreds of burned homes, thousands of livestock dead, and destruction of crops, grasslands, and ranching infrastructure. The United States Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) produced an assessment on the extent of potential damage to agricultural land and activities in the State of Texas from this event. Using the 2023 Cropland Data Layer and the WFIGS Current Interagency Fire Perimeters shapefile downloaded on March 7th (2024), NASS identified agricultural areas that may have been affected by the wildfires. Sampled burned areas were visually confirmed using Sentinel-2 Multi-Spectral Imagery (MSI) and WorldView-3, WorldView-2, and GeoEye-1 high resolution imagery (copyright 2023 Maxar and copyright 2024 Maxar). -------------------- Imagery Inputs Name: Sentinel-2 MSI Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) Images Description: Pre-event Sentinel-2 Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) image (Jan 1 - Feb 25, 2024); Post-event Sentinel-2 Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) image (Feb 26 - Mar 10, 2024) Obtained From: NBR images derived from Sentinel-2 MSI: MultiSpectral Instrument, Level-2A collection - https://developers.google.com/earth-engine/datasets/catalog/COPERNICUS_S2_SR Name: Sentinel-2 Composite Images Description: Pre-event Sentinel-2 median composite image (Jan 1 - Feb 25); Post-event Sentinel-2 median composite image (Feb 26 - Mar 10) Obtained From: Composite images derived from Sentinel-2 MSI: MultiSpectral Instrument, Level-2A collection - https://developers.google.com/earth-engine/datasets/catalog/COPERNICUS_S2_SR Name: WorldView-2 (copyright 2023 Maxar); WorldView-2 (copyright 2024 Maxar); WorldView-3 VNIR (copyright 2024 Maxar); GeoEye-1 (copyright 2023 Maxar) Description: Pre- and Post- event High Resolution Maxar Imagery Obtained From: Global Enhanced GEOINT Delivery (GEGD) Platform -------------------- Agricultural Inputs Name: NASS 2023 Cropland Data Layer (planted acres) Obtained From: Google Earth Engine Website: https://developers.google.com/earth-engine/datasets/catalog/USDA_NASS_CDL Disclaimer: These data are not official NASS estimates.
