Abstract:
Crop Sequence Boundaries (CSB) is a vector-based geospatial dataset which are fully synthetic representations of agricultural fields, their acreage, and cropping rotation history. These new data are primarily derived from a historical stack of Cropland Data Layers over a set time frame based on an algorithm of geospatial functions. It was developed in cooperation with the Economic Research Service.
Purpose:
Crop Sequence Boundaries (CSB) are geospatial algorithm-based field polygons derived from the NASS Cropland Data Layer (CDL). The growth of gridded datasets has fostered applications that require analysis units for aggregating the data to an attribute table. CSBs are created to provide full coverage for the 48 contiguous United States and to be accurate and repeatable across years. CSBs use a specified time frame of historic CDLs, together with road and rail networks, to capture the crop sequence in these synthetic fields. The current archive of these datasets span 8-year time frames for all years from 2008 to 2023. Custom time frames can be created using the GitHub code available at <https://github.com/USDA-REE-NASS/crop-sequence-boundaries/tree/main/csb-project>.

The Crop Sequence Boundaries retain the positional accuracy of the historical Cropland Data Layer (CDL) inputs. The CDL uses Landsat 8 and 9 OLI/TIRS imagery that is obtained via download from the USGS Global Visualization Viewer <https://glovis.usgs.gov/> using the Collection 2 Level-1 specifications. Please reference the metadata on the Glovis website for the positional accuracy of the Landsat imagery. The CDL also uses Sentinel 2A and 2B imagery that is obtained via download from the Copernicus Open Access Hub <https://scihub.copernicus.eu/> using the S2MSI1C product type which is orthorectified Top-of-Atmosphere reflectance. The Crop Sequence Boundaries (CSB rev23) comprise multiple data layers covering 8-year windows derived from historical Cropland Data Layers (CDL). The CSB represents estimates of field boundaries, crop acreage, and crop rotations across the contiguous United States. It uses satellite imagery with other public data and does not contain personal identifying information. The boundaries captured are of crops grown only, not ownership boundaries or tax parcels (unit of property). The creation process is python-based with no manual drawing of field boundaries. The initial preprocessing steps include simplifying CDL category groupings, filtering noise, resampling to 10 meters, re-imposing road and rail network line data, and then stacking desired years. The resulting rasters are converted into polygons on a roughly county-sized subregion basis. Small polygons under 1 hectare with two or more years of crops within the 8-year windows are eliminated into the next largest neighboring polygon to remove islands within fields and to clean field edges. However, if the area is greater than 1 hectare, then only one year of cropland is required for the polygon to be kept. The resulting polygons are simplified to retain critical bends (Wang-Müller algorithm) at a 60 meter tolerance, then merged into a national database, and attribute tables populated. A cloud environment with many processors allows for faster completion of this step as each subregion can be spawned to a processor. These steps are repeated for the 8-year moving window to produce a unique layer of CSB history which currently includes the following time periods: 2008-2015, 2009-2016, 2010-2017, 2011-2018, 2012-2019, 2013-2020, 2014-2021, 2015-2022, and 2016-2023.
