Floriculture Summary

The wholesale value of sales from floriculture crops for all growers with $10,000 or more in sales totaled
$10.3 million for 1997, down 4 percent from the previous year. There were 78 growers producing floriculture
crops during 1997, an increase of 11 growers from the previous year. Ten growers had sales of $500,000 or
more in 1997, compared with nine growers in 1996. There were 16 growers with sales of $100,000 to
$499,999, up 2 growers from a year earlier.

Covered area in floriculture crop production totaled 2.30 million square feet, up 22 percent from 1996.
Greenhouse space, at 2.11 million square feet, accounted for 92 percent of the total covered area. Plastic film
structures were the most widely used, making up 1.11 million square feet of greenhouse space.

The value of bedding/garden plants, at $3.80 million, accounted for 49 percent of total reported sales. Potted
flowering plants had sales amounting to $2.64 million, down 7 percent from 1996. Twenty growers reported
sales of potted poinsettias with a value of $1.07 million, compared with $1.23 million of sales by 19 growers
the previous year.
