Cattle and Calves Summary: All cattle and calves on hand January 1, 1998, totaled 1.30 million head, down
3 percent from the previous year. The inventory of all cows that have calved, at 710,000 head, was down 3
percent from January 1, 1997. Beef cows on hand January 1, 1998, totaled 666,000 head, down 2 percent
from a year earlier, and beef cow replacement heifers, at 125,000, decreased 4 percent. Milk cows declined
8 percent to a record low 44,000 head. Milk cow replacements, at 19,000 head, was the same as a year earlier.
Other heifers weighing over 500 pounds totaled 31,000 head, down 3 percent from January 1, 1997.

Steers weighing 500 pounds or more decreased to 67,000 head, down 4 percent from the previous year. Bulls,
at 48,000 head, were down 2 percent from a year earlier. Calves under 500 pounds totaled 300,000 head,
down 3 percent from January 1, 1997. The 1997 calf crop was estimated at 620,000 head, down 3 percent
from 1996.

All cattle and calves on January 1, 1998, were valued at $585 million, 21 percent above the previous year.
The average value per head was $450, up 25 percent from the previous year. Cash receipts from marketings
totaled $196 million during 1997, up 42 percent from 1996.
