TOTAL PLANTED AREA DOWN 6 PERCENT FROM LAST YEAR

Crops planted1/ in North Dakota for 2001 totaled 18.4 million acres, down 6 percent from 2000 but up 6 percent from 1999's 17.4 million acres. These estimates are based on the results of a June Survey of North Dakota farmers and ranchers conducted by the North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Crops that decreased in acreage were corn, barley, sunflower, durum, oats, rye, and dry edible beans. Soybean, canola, winter wheat, and flax acreage increased. Hard red spring wheat and sugarbeet acres were unchanged from last year. All hay acres harvested are estimated at 2.85 million acres, up 16 percent from 2000.

Soybean planted acres are up 21 percent from 2000 to a new record high of 2.3 million while corn planted acres are down 26 percent to 800,000. Canola planted acres are up 10 percent to 1.4 million, a new record high. Sugarbeet acreage is unchanged from 2000, tying the record high for planted acres set last year. Hard red spring wheat acres are unchanged, at 6.8 million acres, while durum is down 29 percent to 2.3 million acres. All sunflower acres are down 10 percent to 1.2 million acres.

Following are specific North Dakota acreage estimates for 2001:

.    Hard Red Spring Wheat: 6.8 million acres planted, unchanged from last year. Expected acres for harvest are 6.6 million, a 3 percent increase.

.     Durum Wheat: 2.3 million acres planted, down 29 percent. Acreage for harvest is 2.25 million, a 22 percent decrease from last year.

.     Winter Wheat: 160,000 acres planted last fall, up 33 percent and the highest level since 1992. Acreage for harvest is 90,000, a 20 percent decrease from 2000.

.     Barley: 1.6 million acres planted, down 16 percent. Acreage for harvest, at 1.5 million, is down 15 percent.

.     Oats: 580,000 acres planted, down 3 percent from last year and the lowest since 1996. Acreage for grain is 315,000, unchanged from last year.

.     Rye: 13,000 acres planted, down 35 percent and a new record low. Acres for harvest are at 8,000, down 50 percent.

.     Soybeans: 2.3 million acres planted, up 21 percent and the highest level on record.

.     All Corn:
800,000 acres planted, down 26 percent. Acreage to be harvested for grain is expected to be 660,000, down 29 percent from last year.

.     Canola:
1.4 million acres planted, up 10 percent and the highest level since planted estimates began in 1991.

.     Oil Sunflower: 900,000 acres planted, down 12 percent and the lowest since 1996 when acreage was also 900,000.

.     Non-Oil Sunflower: 300,000 acres planted, down 6 percent.

.     Dry Edible Beans:
470,000 acres planted, down 23 percent and the lowest level since 1992.

.     Flaxseed:
530,000 acres planted, up 8 percent and the highest level since 1986 when acreage was 575,000.

.     Sugarbeets: 258,000 acres planted, unchanged from last year and tied for the highest level on record with the 2000 crop.

.     Alfalfa Hay: 1.55 million acres expected to be cut, up 15 percent from last year.

.     Other Hay: 1.3 million acres expected to be cut, up 18 percent from last year.
