The Organic Survey is a complete inventory of all known certified organic producers and those producers transitioning to certified organic production.

Your response provides vital, detailed, unbiased information to help determine the economic impact of certified organic production at the national and state levels. In 2022, the United States reported $9.6 billion in sales of certified organic farm products, up 13% from 2017. Although in 2022 the number of farms certified or exempt declined by 5%, with 17,445 farms, the number of producers maintained relatively steady at 19,366. Data published from the 2025 Organic Survey will help provide the industry with a reliable source of timely information on where the industry stands and future trends that benefit producers.

The agriculture industry and other levels of government use the information to prepare a wide variety of certified organic agricultural-related reports, economic codes, legislative initiatives, and market analysis and feasibility studies. These programs directly affect the life and communities of known and potential producers.

• Agencies such as USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) use the data to evaluate and establish crop insurance programs for organic crops.
• Farm organizations use the information to lobby Congress, develop programs to protect the marketing and support of certified organic production.
• Research universities and university scientists use the information to determine research needs.
• The information could be used to calculate disaster payments for producers.
• Suppliers to the certified organic industry use the data to plan production and marketing of new products according to survey results.

Survey forms will be mailed in December 2026 to approximately 22,000 producers nationwide. Responses are due online, by mail, or by phone by February 5, 2027.

Yes. Survey participants are encouraged to use the secure online response system at agcounts.usda.gov. The system is user-friendly, accessible on most electronic devices, and includes skip logic that automatically calculates totals and skips questions not applicable to your operation. Online responses include on-screen instructions and key resources. All you need to get started is your survey code. If you misplace either your survey code or survey, you can also find it on the mail label and in the top left corner of your report form.

The survey will look at certified organic farming and ranching activities during 2026, including: field crops and vegetables, fruits, tree nuts, berries, livestock, and poultry.

Yes. The 2026 Organic survey collects data from only certified organic producers.

Yes. The information you provide will be used for statistical purposes only. In accordance with federal law, your responses will be kept confidential and will not be disclosed in identifiable form.

By law, every NASS employee and enumerator is subject to a jail term of up to 5 years, a fine of up to $250,000, or both, if they disclose any identifiable information about a respondent.

Survey results will be published in late 2027 and will be available at www.nass.usda.gov/go/organic.
